When people saw Jesus as holy as he is making arrangements to visit Zacchaeus who was considered a sinner, they reacted. They felt like it was not proper for Jesus to spend time with such a corrupt person.
In Luke 19: 5-7 the Bible says, “And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to-day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, He is gone in to lodge with a man that is a sinner” (ASV). People have a way of choosing and picking who may be interacting with you, but not with God. God wants to have fellowship with you because to him you are special. He has made a way through Jesus for sins to be taken away.
Why was this group of people opposed to what was happening between Jesus and Zacchaeus? Well, we could possibly say that they were opposed to this interaction because it was strange to them. How can a a holy man have anything to do with a sinner? Absolutely nothing. However, Jesus was introducing a new way of doing things.
In Matthew 5:46 the Bible says, “For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same” (ASV). Jesus stepped out of eternity into time as a man to save us. He is the same Jesus who was stepping out to reach out to Zacchaeus. The same principle is valid today. Anyone with the Spirit of God will be moved to reach out to those who need Jesus Christ as savior.
God loves us. In John 3:16 the Bible declares, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life” (ASV). Without love that group around that tree on that day did not know they were witnessing the manifestation of the love of God.
Your response to God’s love will open your eyes to new light. When you meet Jesus, light will shine in your heart. This is where new life begins.
