Spiritual Authority

The spiritual authority of a believer lies in the fact that he is a child of God. Who you are matters. In Acts 19:13-15 the Scripture says, “Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, we adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?” This is an important question. Who are you? Who you are, has a lot to do with who you are related to and not on your ability. This is what the seven sons of Sceva most likely misunderstood.

We have to understand that the identity of the seven sons of Sceva was limited to that of earthly status. Strength in numbers did not help them despite having a father with religious authority as the chief of the priests. Status and strength in numbers meant nothing to the demonic forces they confronted. Well, they were seven of them, but still remained powerless. Power travels in relationships and when you become a child of God you get positioned for spiritual strength through your relationship with God.

A religious title can easily cause power to dissipate because it inflates the ego and when a minister is not careful to avoid being puffed up, it can lead to not being effective. We can see that Paul the Apostle was wise enough to see through the deception of social status as a result he ended up pursuing the power of God in ways that please God. He humbled himself and made sure he knew who he was and that is why he was able to continued casting out demons, raising the dead and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the unreached.

The power of God rested on Paul and as an Apostle that is why he fulfilled his responsibility as a gift to the body of Christ. He was chosen by God for the purpose of edifying the body of Christ and he did it well. At the end he even mentioned that he had fought a good fight. He walked in humility so as to let the power of God rest upon him. He is truly a good example for us from the book of Acts.

If you are a child of God, then you have a “father son “relationship with him. This is not something that the mind makes up. It is something that really happens when one surrenders his or her will to God through Jesus Christ. It starts with the act of the will and ends with the change of heart made possible only through God. The Spirit of God comes into anyone who surrenders to God and that same Spirit who comes in cries to God saying “Abba Father” because it is the Spirit of sonship. This is important in regard to what Christ has done and still does on earth.

When this relationship is established, the individual who becomes a child of God is able to effectively deal with demonic forces. Now, to rescue people from demonic powers one has to triumph over sin by first becoming a child of God. If you indulge in sin it means you are operating in the domain in which demons have dominion over and in those areas demons have power over human beings. In Christ they do not have power over any children of God. As a child of God demons have no power over you. This power differential has been made possible through the blood of Jesus Christ. As a child of God, your relationship with him affords you the ability to overcome and defeat demonic forces. This is what constitutes spiritual authority.

When Christ was tempted after fasting for forty days, Satan brought up the issue of sonship. Satan wanted Christ to prove he was a son of God by using the power of a son of God to turn stones into bread. Later, at the time Christ was being crucified, people also demanded he should come down from the cross to prove he was the “Son of God”. The cross was really a part of God’s plan that is why he did not need to save himself then. This plan was for our redemption and I thank God that he completed this special work as planned. You can also be part of that plan and that is why now is the time you should be sure you are a child of God.

If you are not sure you are a child of God, take time to ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart. In this personal and private time, talk to God about the sins in your life that come to mind and mention them to him until you know he has heard you. Tell Jesus that you do not want to be in sin anymore. Ask him to forgive all your sins so that he can be your Savior. Talk to him until you have mentioned everything you think is sinful in your life and then thank him for accepting you as you are. Thank him for the way he has made it possible for you to surrender your will to him so that you can become a child of God. At the end say “Amen” meaning that you want everything you have mentioned to be done as you have asked in the name of Jesus Christ.
