It is important for a believer to take care of himself physically, emotionally as well as spiritually. Not paying careful attention to one’s well-being can eventually cause problems in one’s ability to effectively help people. What is the foundation for self-care? The foundation for self-care is love.
In Matthew 22:37-39 the Bible says, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (KJV). When you love yourself you will definitely care for yourself. Caring for other people is not easy to do when you do not care for yourself. It starts with love. You have to love yourself and caring for yourself really stems from that same love you have for yourself.
One of the things to keep in mind is that your effectiveness will always depend how well prepared you are for spiritual activities. Prayer is important in caring for yourself. People who do not pray may not do well when facing temptations. The danger here is that a believer can easily fail when tempted if he is not prayerful. In Matthew 26:40-41 the Bible says, “And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (KJV). Prayer prepares a believer for times of temptation. However we also have to remember that it is the will of God for us to pray without stopping. A prayerful person is an overcomer in life.
