The Sense of Justice – Part 4

The crime of rape can happen in families and it can cause hatred among family members. David’s children hated each other because of the rape that happened in their family. In 2 Samuel 13: 1-2 the Bible says, “And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her” (KJV). We have to remember that this happened because David despised the word of God by committing an immoral act with Bath-Sheba. What happened between David and Bath-Sheba is actually what led to problems in King David’s family.

After what happened with Bath-Sheba, the prophet told David that the sword would be in his house. This meant that his own children were going to end up killing each other. In 2 Samuel 12:10 the Bible says, “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife” (KJV). By sinning with Bath-Sheba, David despised the word of God and that is why he opened up his family to demonic activities.

David was told by Nathan the prophet that his first son with Bath-Sheba was going to die. He tried to change that word of prophecy by fasting for the child, but the fasting could not help at all. As time went on, the true nature of that iniquity began to affect David’s family in a most subtle way. The next situation began with his son Amnon who lusted for his sister Tamar which led to the crime of rape.

This was an iniquity in the sense that it was a violation of the rights of the young lady Tamar. As a matter of duty, Amnon was really supposed to protect his sister, instead of violating her. That was a violation of his duty since he was really a brother to her. Amnon came up with a plan by an accomplice and it was premeditated like most crimes. Somewhere somehow for Amnon, self correction was missing. There was no self control.

The man could not think through things very well to correct himself because the prophetic word had to come to pass. In this case we know that the cause came from something that happened in the family. What about in my family or your family. There is no way of knowing, but today Jesus offers the answer. In Christ there is repentance and forgiveness of sin and that is what leads to a new beginning.
