Why Baptism is from God

One day when Jesus was preaching in the Temple the chief priests, scribes and elders came around and questioned him about his authority. Jesus answered them with a question and from the look of things the chief priests and the others did not think through things very well. They could not answer the question Jesus asked them which ended up in a stalemate on the question of his authority.

Now, reality cannot be changed by a concept. Concepts operate in the realms of reality and reality itself is rooted in truth. Anyone can look at anything that exists right in front of him and still refute the fact that it exists. Refusing to acknowledge a fact does not change anything. Whatever exists, exists period. When anything is a fact it means concepts or thoughts cannot change its present state.

The chief priests knew that the people’s response to John the Baptist’s ministry provided the evidence to a spiritual reality they experienced. People just responded to the reality of what God was doing and that was evidence enough for God’s authority. They believed that the ministry of John the Baptist was from God that is why they wanted to be baptized in water. John’s ministry was authentic.

In Luke 20:3-4 the Bible says, “And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men” (KJV). They could not answer the question because they were not truthful. The chief priests, scribes and elders just wanted to tangle Jesus in some man made concepts, but Jesus is the truth. The truth can never be entangled in some misconception. You can also avoid entanglements by being connected to Jesus Christ for he is the truth.

When we are under grace, we are like those eight souls in Noah’s flood who got saved. The question that Jesus asked the chief priests is still valid today because the word of God does not change. According to Genesis chapter five and verse six we are told that man’s thoughts are evil and that this situation grieved God’s heart. In verse 7 of the same chapter the Bible says, “And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth…” (KJV). This is what led to Noah’s flood and only eight people who found grace in God’s sight were saved. When you give your heart to Jesus you find grace with God just like Noah and his family found grace with God.

This is the way of salvation which now occurs through Jesus Christ and it is an offer of grace to the whole human race. Anyone who comes to Jesus crosses over from death to life. This is what John’s baptism does and that is why it is from God.
