In Joshua 1: 2 the Bible says, “Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and this entire people, unto the land which I do give” (KJV). This command came to Joshua because God chose him to lead the people across the Jordan River into the Promised Land. What God had promised for Israel came by the river of God. The promises of God come to us through Christ and in him there in a river of life. That is the river of God.
The whole nation of Israel at that time knew Joshua as an assistant to Moses, but was he fit for the next job? That might have been the question that was going through their minds. Due to all this, God had to come through for Joshua. God spoke to Joshua and prepared him for his new responsibilities. God had to show the whole nation that his seal of approval was on Joshua.
In Joshua 3:7 the Bible says, “And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee” (KJV). When the people knew that God had approved Joshua they had no problems submitting to his leadership.
People have no problem following a ministry leader who is approved by God. In the case of Joshua a great wonder was done so that the people could know that God had approved him as a leader in Israel. God parted the River Jordan and Israel crossed into the Promised Land. God was dealing with Israel so that the whole nation could be of one mind and heart. That is how they managed to cross the River Jordan.
