River stones appear to have certain characteristics due to the fact that they tumble, crush, and roll by the forces they encounter as the river flows. Those who are knowledgable can tell whether a stone was picked from a river because of these characteristics. Jesus told the people to follow him so that he would make them into fishers of men. It is God who makes people into what they aught to be and he will do that work in you as you surrender your will to him.
People who believe in Jesus Christ embrace his instructions through the word of God and the Holy Spirit provides the river like experience that produces the characteristics that reflect the life of God. That life is the light of all men. The believer’s walk in the spirit is like that tumble and roll of that stone in the river. God changes people as they see who he really is and he is doing it right now in those who have surrendered their will to him
The walk with the Holy Spirit is what produces the characteristics that reflect the true nature of God. This is what is called the fruit of the spirit. Without this experience no one can reflect the true likeness of God. The new birth experience found in Christ is what starts off this journey. At the end, the true likeness of the image of God is what ends up being visible and it is a powerful witness to the whole world.
In John 7:38-39 Jesus says, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified” (ASV). Now, Jesus has been glorified and the Holy Spirit is given to those who believe. Now is the time to flow with the river of God.
If you have not yet given your life to Jesus Christ, you can do it now and the Holy Spirit will walk along side you. That is what will help you to produce the fruit that abides for ever. That is what produces the characteristics that reflect the true likeness of God. These are like the characteristics of a river stone, smooth and well rounded due to all the experiences of being in the will of God.
