How to be an Overcomer

Have you ever wondered if God is with you when you are experiencing difficulties in life? If you have, then I want to let you know that you are not alone. The people of faith sometimes had to question things just to make sure God was with them.

Trials can make someone feel like God no longer cares. As a believer in Christ you will once in a while be presented with trials which are really opportunities to help you seek God for direction. These trials are not meant to destroy you although they might appear like they are really about to ruin you completely. When John the Baptist was in prison he was going through a trying time in his life and that is why he sent his disciples to Jesus to try to find out if Jesus was the Messiah.

John the Baptist had questions when things were hard. However, in order to assure him, the answer Jesus sent with the disciples simply implied that he did not need to worry because the will of God was being accomplished. I believe that John was comforted by the message he received from Jesus that day despite that he was still going through a very hard time.

David the son of Jesse also had a similar predicament when his family was taken captive from the city of Ziklag. In his circumstance David made the right decision and choice. In 1 Samuel 30:6 the Bible says,“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God” (‭KJV). The situation was so depressing for David and his men, but he encouraged himself in the Lord. When you encourage yourself in the Lord you position yourself to make the right choices.

This experience was a difficult one for David, but when he encouraged himself in the Lord that is when he was able to make the right choice and finally overcame. Your choices must be dictated by what God wants and not what you want. The God David served is the same God we serve. You are an overcomer because you believe in the same God who sustained and fought for David. You overcome because you do what he wants you to do. In whatever you are going through encourage yourself in the Lord so that you can move on in life.

God cares about you! He will neither leave you nor forsake you and his promises are meant to help you to become strong in those odd circumstances. At times it might feel like God has left you alone, but he has not. God will always be with you when you are in Christ.
