We are in a spiritual conflict which actually started in heaven. In Revelation 12:7-8 the Bible says, “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven” (KJV). The word, “dragon” in this Scripture refers to Satan and he is the one who was defeated in that war.
How did this war in heaven start? Well, this war started because of a thought. In Isaiah 14:13 Satan had a thought which says, ”…I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north” (KJV). As a result war broke out, Satan got defeated and was cast out of heaven. That is how he found himself here on earth and in a very subtle way caused man to disobey God by eating from the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil which was in the middle of the garden of Eden which God forbed Adam and Eve to eat from. This was the beginning of trouble for mankind.
It was a sad situation here on earth that is why in Revelation 12:12 the Bible says, “…Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (KJV). Despite what happened, God made a way. He sent his son Jesus Christ to redeem us. Through Christ we now have power to defeat this eternal enemy of God. This is the reason why Jesus came. He came so that we can fight and win this war.
One day when Jesus sent the disciples to preach the gospel, they came back rejoicing because of the victory they had over demons. This is recorded in Luke 10:17-18 where the Bible says, “And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (KJV). In this Scripture the Lord Jesus is showing us that what happened in heaven is now happening on earth. Satan is being cast out and he has no power over people when they are in Christ. Yes, in christ we have power over all the power of the enemy.
The best fighting position is found in Christ. It starts with a new birth experience followed by a life lived in ways known to be above reproach. In this position the people of God possess weapons that are strong enough to stop whatever the enemy depends on in his fight against them. Those who believe in Christ can only be effective at dealing with this conflict when they walk in obedience to God. In Corinthians 10:6 the Bible says, “And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled” (KJV). Obedience to God is the best fighting position and that is what helps to defeat the enemy.
In 2 Corinthians 10: 4-5 the Bible says,”(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (KJV). Does spiritual warfare really involve thoughts? Yes, it does.
War in heaven started because of a thought against God’s authority that is why we have to deal with imaginations and thoughts that contradict the ways of God. In Christ, all imaginations and thoughts must come in line with the word of God. We have the responsibility as believers in Christ to bring thoughts and imaginations under subjection to God’s authority in the name of Jesus Christ.
Are you using your authority in Christ?
