One day when people who followed Jesus needed food, he seemed to have had the obligation to do something about it. He looked at the multitudes and then told the apostles to give them something to eat. The apostles knew that buying bread was going to cost a lot of money, but they had already bought into the idea that it was their responsibility to give food to the people.
When you become a follower of Jesus Christ you also become part of what Jesus wants done here on earth. Jesus wants people’s needs met. He wants the hungry to be fed. Jesus wants a deaf ear to hear and a blind eye to see. He wants every captive of sin to be set free. Jesus wants everyone’s need met. He has the resources and will always channel them through us when we remain in him and just follow his instructions.
During that meeting Jesus told the disciples to give the people food. Jesus is telling us the same thing. Feed the hungry, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers and so forth. Now, in order to do all this, we have to abide in him. In John 15:5 Jesus says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing”(KJV). Jesus is the source of help we give to other people as believers.
The truth is that without Jesus we can do nothing. For us to do what Jesus wants done, we have to continue having a healthy and abiding relationship with him. Walking with Jesus means being obedience to what he instructs us to do. It means turning away from sin and then living by his word so that we become vessels ready for the master’s use. Living in sin is really living without him and without Jesus we can do nothing!
Are you living by his word?
