When you are a child of God, you have the ability to hear the voice of God. If someone is not a child of God, such a one has no ability to differentiate God’s voice from other voices. In John 10: 27 the Lord Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (KJV). As a child of God, God will speak to you first and you will differentiate the truth from whatever is false.
Now, as a child of God, you have the ability to hear his voice with or without the help of a prophet. Jesus dwells within you by faith and due to this fact, the Spirit of God now dwells inside you, in real time. In Romans 8:16 the Bible says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (KJV). That witness the Spirit bears in our spirit is key in differentiating the voice of God from other voices.
As a child of God, when I hear a word from any prophet, I am able to know if it is for me or not. This is due to the fact that I would hear what God is saying before that word of prophecy is brought forth. This is also what happened to Paul the Apostle. In Acts 21:11 in regards to what Agabus prophesied to Paul, the Bible says, “And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles”(KJV). The fact is that Paul knew about the difficulties he would face in Jerusalem before the prophecy was given, but he was still determined to go to Jerusalem despite having been warned by the word of prophecy too. Paul knew what was going on and Agabus was just confirming it by the word of prophecy.
The situation was tense, but Paul tried to calm everyone down. In Acts 21:13 the Bible says, “Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus” (KJV). Paul knew what God was saying to him even before Agabus the prophet spoke to him.
As a child of God, never be caught by surprise. Make sure you know what God is saying before other believers say anything to you and always be determined to do what God wants you to do. Paul did it and he was able to fight a good fight of faith.
